Research at Nuseed

Research at Nuseed is focused on the development of inbred lines and hybrids for oilseed and confectionery hybrids. Nuseed maintains a diverse collection of sunflower lines and breeding populations. Each year thousands of breeding plots are planted, selected, and crossed to develop elite inbred lines.

Research emphasizes early maturity, herbicide and disease resistance, and fatty acid composition. We also collaborate with public and private researchers around the world to identify the best products for our customers. More than 130 bee isolation cages with a total area of 6 acres (2.5 hectares) under net are used to maintain the genetic purity of our finished inbreds and to facilitate crossing. Numerous jointly derived hybrids as well as our own source hybrids are tested each year in Woodland and in our customers' locations.

Research plots occupy more than 20 acres (7-8 hectares) each year.

Laboratory screening identifies plants resistant to Downy Mildew.

Herbicide resistant plants are screened regularly in breeding nurseries.

Elite inbred lines are multiplied in bee isolation cages and crossed.

Hybrids are field tested to identify superior inbred combinations.
