Nuseed Americas and ADM collaborate to deliver premium sorghum products
July 23, 2013
DECATUR, Ill. July 23, 2013 (Overland Park, Kan. and Alsip, Ill.) – Nuseed Americas and Archer Daniels Midland Company (ADM) are collaborating to deliver premium sorghum flour products to food companies and specialty providers seeking to meet the needs of health-conscious and gluten intolerant consumers. ADM will utilize Nuseed’s recently established Wholis™ branded sorghum supply chain, which includes premium genetics, specifically located and qualified growers, and consistently contracted specifications, to ensure a consistent, quality sorghum grain, bred for food use.
Sorghum, an ancient grain originating in Africa and India, is commonly used in a variety of foods worldwide. In North America, sorghum acres are on the rise due to its environmental flexibility and drought hardiness. However, the grain is often overlooked in food applications despite its qualities as a nutrient-rich, whole grain, gluten-free flour.
“ADM is committed to helping our customers meet the growing demand for whole grain, gluten-free foods,” said Brian Forster, general manager of Wheat Starch and Protein for ADM Milling, a subsidiary of ADM based in Overland Park, Kan. “Sorghum provides a strong nutrient profile and is gluten free. In addition, Nuseed sorghum is highly versatile due to its unique light color and neutral flavor.”
ADM’s Harvest Pearl White Sorghum Flour and Harvest Pearl White Whole Grain Sorghum Flour are sourced with grain provided by the Nuseed closed-loop network of growers in western Kansas, abiding by specific seed and grain quality requirements.
Nuseed, via its subsidiary Richardson Seeds of Vega, Texas, has been breeding sorghum in the United States for more than 50 years. Nuseed’s investment in premium quality sorghum varieties for human consumption prompted the introduction of its Wholis™ network.
“Nuseed is working to develop opportunities beyond the seed sale,” said Tim Birkel, Nuseed Commercial Director. “As we promote awareness of sorghum in the food chain, we understand the necessity for food companies to have a consistent supply of grain, bred specifically for use as a food product. The Wholis™ branded sorghum supply chain ensures a consistent, uniform, gluten-free supply of premium quality sorghum grain. We are thrilled to be working with ADM and believe our experience in sorghum breeding and agronomics will complement ADM’s technical, milling and distribution capability.”
